State-funded traffic enforcement grants will continue in April, with 12 deployments scheduled. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office and the Madison Police Department will once again collaborate on these deployments, focusing on impaired driving and seatbelt use; two of the main factors contributing to serious injury and fatal crashes.
The March deployments led to hundreds of citations for drivers violating traffic laws. Additionally, 3 people were arrested for OWIs during these overtime enforcement efforts.
“Our goal with this type of focused enforcement is not to issue as many tickets as we can,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett. “Our goal is to change dangerous driving behaviors before they lead to tragedy."
While the traffic grants from the Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety, focus on driver behaviors such as speeding, seatbelt use, and impaired driving, deputies will enforce all traffic laws.
