MADISON — Dane County Executive Melissa Agard has officially proclaimed May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month, aligning with national efforts led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to highlight the importance of mental well-being for individuals, families, and communities.
“Mental health is fundamental to our overall health, and it’s time we treat it that way,” said County Executive Agard. “In Dane County, we are committed to fostering a community where everyone feels supported and has access to the resources they need to thrive.”
The Dane County Department of Human Services (DCDHS) offers a comprehensive range of behavioral health services, including counseling, medication management, crisis intervention, peer support, residential services, vocational support, and case management. These services are designed to be person-centered and individualized, assisting individuals in achieving their self-selected goals.
A key resource is the Behavioral Health Resource Center (BHRC), a free community service that helps residents navigate and access behavioral health services, regardless of insurance status, financial situation, age, identity, ability, or legal status.
Nationally, SAMHSA's 2025 Mental Health Awareness Month campaign emphasizes that mental health is essential for overall well-being at every stage of life. The campaign provides resources and messaging to encourage acceptance and support for people living with mental illness.
County Executive Agard encourages all Dane County residents to participate in Mental Health Awareness Month by engaging in open conversations about mental health, supporting friends and family members, and utilizing available resources.
“This month — and every month — we must work to end the stigma around mental health,” Agard added. “Seeking help is a sign of strength, and no one should ever feel alone in their journey toward healing and wellness. Together, we can build a stronger, more compassionate community.”
