A Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy performed the Heimlich maneuver on a jail resident today, potentially saving the man from a life-threatening situation.
Shortly after lunch, a deputy was checking on jail residents in the Public Safety Building when he saw a man crouched on his bunk. When the deputy asked if the man was okay, he didn’t react. The deputy immediately called for other staff to respond, including medical staff. They entered the cell and determined the man was choking. A large piece of apple was dislodged when a deputy performed the Heimlich maneuver. The medical staff were on-hand to provide aftercare.
“This is a great example of the importance of consistent training,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett. “This man’s life may have been at risk if our deputy had not had the awareness and training to perform this simple yet effective procedure.”
