Dane County Board to Recognize Black History Month

The Dane County Board of Supervisors will meet tonight, February 1 at 7:00pm.  At the meeting, the County Board will recognize February as Black History Month.  

Black History month has been recognized annually by the United States since 1926.  The resolution indicates that it is important to recognize and commemorate the resilience, leadership, and cultural richness of the African American community, as well as to promote understanding and appreciation of the diverse experiences and narratives within Black history.  

“Black History Month celebrates the great achievements, heritage, and contributions of African Americans.  I’m pleased that the County Board is recognizing this very important month, but also want it to be a reminder that it is not limited to the month of February.  The accomplishments and contributions of African Americans should be celebrated throughout the entire year, and we also need to recognize that we have so much further to go in the fight for equity,” said County Board Supervisor and Second Vice-Chair, April Kigeya (District 15).

“Black History Month provides an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the important impact that people of African heritage have had on the country and our county,” said County Board Supervisor Chad Kemp (District 32).
